Word on the Street Festival

I have contacted Nicola, the festival director of the "Word on the Street Festival", which is held in the city each September. It is a great author's event held at Queen's Park right in the centre of town.

I am hoping they are interested in learning more about books on the disabled experience! I think it would be a great event to showcase "Travels in a Blue Chair", and open some eyes to the book loving general public. Here's hoping!

Accessibility Toronto - Rogers TV show

The program is great, and features accomplishments of the disabled community in the city.

It is hard to believe that another year of this bloggiary is coming to an end soon!

This year has been quite eventful with appearances, interviews and even some travels! My travel experiences this year were quite interesting in both a good and a bad way. More to come on the bad part later on.

Serge, a buddy of mine who is a great reader, recently told me about the website GoodReads. He is an avid reader and urged me to participate as an author to try to spread the word about the book.

I have set up an "Author's Page", although it is quite sparse just now. I am trying to determine the best approach, and will be updating it regularly. The website urges me to run a contest to raise interest so I will be considering that.

Gretzky is a great guy!

I recently attended an event for the local hospital last night, and the guest speaker was Wayne Gretzky! Wayne is only the greatest hockey player of all time and does quite a lot of charity work now that he is in his retirement.

As I was enjoying a glass of wine and some sushi, someone to my left stuck out his hand for me to shake. Since I am in a chair, I didn't see who it was at first, as his head is at a different level than mine, but I shook the hand without thinking. It turned out to be Wayne!!

I told him my "Gretzky story", about how I was in the old Buffalo Aud when he scored a natural hat trick in the third period to win the game 3-2, and in doing so, he broke Phil Esposito's NHL goal scoring record. He laughed when I told him I was annoyed with him, because he scored all the goals at the other end of the ice, since I was behind the Oilers net that night.

I gave him a signed copy of my book, Travels in a Blue Chair, and he was really interested. Later, when it was time for my picture to be taken with him, he even remembered my name, likely because it is also his dad's name. On the way out he again called my name and said he looked forward to reading it.

Wayne is well known for his mild mannered demeanor and being a nice guy. He really is too!

Toronto Public Library - speaking @ Pape and Danforth

I have been contacted by Alice at the Pape and Danforth branch of the Toronto Public Library about speaking about "Travels in a Blue Chair" in the spring!

One of the great things I enjoy is being able to reach out to readers and travellers alike, especially at libraries. One of my most memorable was in Haldimand-Norfolk, when I packed the house with enthusiastic readers!

I am really looking forward to getting out there and meeting the group at the Pape and Danforth branch in a short while. Thanks Alice!

The library and the written word

One of the great things about writing a book is the fact that many libraries, all over the world, will pick up your book and allow a wider audience access to my adventures!

Interestingly, I have been informed that I will be receiving an entitlement to royalties based on the number of times "Travels in a Blue Chair" was checked out.

I hope that some of the people who read the book will tell others about it and continue to spread the word!

Four years of Travels in a Blue Chair !!

It is hard to believe, but this month marks four years since publishing my book. I have had so many positive experiences over that time, and many struggles too! Somehow the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

I have received emails from people all over the world telling me that the book has helped get them out of their towns and explore the world. I have spoken to numerous groups both disabled and not, telling my stories and then receiving positive feedback. The book, "Travels in a Blue Chair" is now in libraries all over the world, and was even read aloud into a talking book!

I have appeared on a few morning talk shows and then received lots of feedback from them. It also took me four years to write the book, and 20 years of travel before that too!

Many thanks to each and everyone of my friends and family who have helped along the way, and to all my new friends, from all over the world, whom I continue to meet!

The next chapter has yet to be written!

Attending weddings.

I had the great honour of attending my niece Jessica's wedding last month and there is another one coming up next month. When I attend such events, I am invariably introduced to people as an author and it always seems to boost the interest of the book.

I will really have to think of a way to attend more public events and who knows? Maybe the word will really spread and we can more disabled people interested in travelling this great planet.

Welland Eastdale Graduation - guest speaker

After the great time I enjoyed with all my schoolmates from high school days at the reunion last month, I was honoured to be asked by the principal of the school to be the guest speaker at this year's edition of the graduation.

I had a bit of a blip getting there, as I left work a bit early to drive down for the mid-week, 6 pm event. Unluckily for me, I only got as far as Burlington before the car died. I had only one hour to get there, so had to take a taxi to my hometown of Welland.

The grad was at an Italian banquet hall, which is a much better venue that the gym, where we had received our diplomas. I was a bit nervous, but once on stage, I remembered some good times at Eastdale, and how my classmates had left me on top of the table in the old Grade 13 room. In the end, it was all the girls from the Physics class who came to my rescue! I also spoke about "Travels in Blue Chair" and how my days in the school helped me in my travels.

I received lots of great feedback from teachers, graduates and their families. It was so heartwarming to be allowed to speak at the event and watch the next generation of young adults take their first step into the future.

Many thanks to Ed, the principal, who invited me and even offered to drive me home! Luckily, my brother John did that.

Visit to Holland and England.

I have been working really hard for the last 9 months, so it was time for a bit of a holiday earlier this month. Of course, I went backpacking!

First stop was Holland, and Amsterdam actually. I had emailed some Dutch friends to see who could meet up for a drink, and Seline, a girl I had met in Cape Town, South Africa said she would be around all week!!

We had a great time, exploring Amsterdam, Den Haag, and Rotterdam, in her fast, little Citroen. I was staying at a hostel, and shared a dorm room with 5 German guys, who enjoyed coming in around 3 am., and then turning on all the lights to laugh and taken drunken photos of each other!

Seline, really knew Holland, and she is such a sweet person. We renewed our friendship easily and enjoyed each other's company.

In Den Haag, we met Esther, my Dutch friend who lives in England. Esther was in the country for her niece's birthday, and so we met for pancakes at the beach in Kijduin beach. Great fun, and her little daughter, and mom were also there. We ate, exchanged stories and walked on the promenade so that the baby could play a little.

Seline and I later toured The Hague and Rotterdam, with Seline handling my chair like an expert. It was a real treat for me, as usually I am wheeling around on my own.

Afterwards, I headed to England to meet up with Esther and Luke in Hampshire. It was Luke's birthday that night and later on the weekend, we enjoyed a visit to Farnham, so the munchkin could visit the playground and we could enjoy a nice brunch!

I had a short visit in both countries, but it was so great to meet up with good friends I have met while travelling!!

Eastdale Reunion

This past weekend I attended the reunion for the 50 years that my old secondary school has existed. The events ran for three days and I was able to attend 2 days worth.

It was very surprising and humbling to see how many former classmates and friends had heard of the book, and the event organiser, Barry, even had a copy of "Travels in a Blue Chair" that he asked me to sign. Barry confessed he hadn't had time to read it, due to all his great work on the reunion, but promised to relax with it after things settled down.

It was so great to see so many friends from my youth. The favourite quote of the weekend, would be a fellow stopping, pointing at me, smiling and yelling "I carried you up those stair for five years!". Great stuff. Now they have an elevator for the students who need it and they have wheelchair friendly washrooms too! That's great, but in a small way it is sad too. With no elevator in those days, I sure met lots of other students who assisted me, and I am sure I would never have interacted with them otherwise.

Hats off to Barry, Debbie and their committee for all the great work! And hats off to the class of 77/78, as we were the largest, friendliest and loudest year at the events!!

I hope we all meet up again at the next reunion too!

Kim and Nick are going to Europe!

This week I received a wonderful email from Kim out in Victoria, who said that...

"Your undaunted enthusiasm to travel is motivating me along with my husband in his electric chair and our three kids to train through Europe this summer and visit friends."

Can you imagine how great that makes me feel? To know that someone who has read "Travels in a Blue Chair" wants to get out and see the world, after reading my short stories....makes me really happy!

I can't even imagine what it would be like to go to five or six countries with 3 kids, while being in a chair, but I do know one thing...it will be quite an adventure!!

I have urged them to write a blog and keep everyone up to date. I know I will want to know what experiences they are enjoying! Bon Voyage!

Travel with a Mate - writing an article

I am in the process of writing an article for the website "Travel with a Mate", which is geared to all different forms of travel.

I was alerted to this website, but a blogger whom I follow, and who has written for the site. I browsed their inventory of articles, and couldn't find anything about travellers who are disabled.

Of course I will be writing about what it is like to backpack alone across the world, and hopefully there will be some extra exposure for "Travels in a Blue Chair".

My friend Harvey

On the weekend my good friend Harvey passed away suddenly. He is a great loss to his family and friends who loved him.

Harvey and I travelled around Ontario quite a bit when I played sledge hockey for 10 years. He was the coach of the team, and I was one of the players. We had similar likes and both of us loved topical conversations about sports, travel and life.

When I wrote the book, Harvey was one of the first to order it and read it. He was a great reader, and he was so encouraging to me. He liked the book, because he had been a backpacker in his younger day, all over Europe and in Israel, where he met his wife. I was always in awe of his stories and the things he experienced during the days of the Cold War, and he loved listening to my stories about my travels.

In these last few years, we camped together with our other buddy, John. We camped each September, once the camping season was quieting down, and the weather was still nice. Originally we camped in a tent, then for a few years in his camper, and finally, after John and his wife bought a condo up north, on the couch or floor in his new place.

We all had fun, and became a part of Harvey's life and family. Harvey, you were a wonderful friend and I will miss you.

Accessibility Conference in Cambridge

One of the best things about writing a book is the fact that it really impacts people.

My friend Lynn, out in Cambridge, was attending an accessibility conference this week and informed me that she was passing out information about "Travels in a Blue Chair".

YAY Lynn!

I know that access is very important and we have made great strides in the last two decades, but there is still a long way to go. Here in Toronto, most of the subway stations are not even wheelchair friendly!! Can you imagine that in the 21st Century?? Terrible.

My own problems with access in the Third World has somewhat hampered my travels, but not much, as I always ask for help (as you know if you have read the book!!).

The more access, the more travellers in chairs, no matter what colour they are!!

A long lost friend

I have had the pleasure this month to receive an email from a former co-worker, who moved away out west to Calgary, after the company we both worked for many years ago, closed down.

Jean had thought of me and searched my name on the internet. In doing so she found out about "Travels in a Blue Chair" and was excited to contact me to revive our friendship!! We had always chatted at work about various topics, including our mutual love of cabbage rolls.

I will be seeing some of our mutual friends at a Super Bowl party next weekend and it will be nice to update everyone on how she is doing.

Also, I learned she now has a copy of the book. I only wish I could sign the copy for her. Who knows? I hope our paths will cross again in the future!

A British Library

One of the aspects of writing a book is trying to get it into libraries. Many people cannot afford their own copy of "Travels in a Blue Chair", and I am gratified that many libraries in North America, and even Australia have multiple copies available to lend out.

Unfortunately, there are no copies in any British library (at least that I know of). If you live in Britain, could you please request that your local library pick up a copy to put on the shelves? I think it would be a great way to start off the year!!

It is hard to believe that another year of "Travels in a Blue Chair (the book bloggiary)" is almost finished!

More people have become aware of it and many new libraries have acquired the book. I have participated in numerous book readings and events.

TIBC is now available to the blind, via 14 hours of cassette recording as a talking book! I am so proud of that.

Big Guy's Little Coffee Shop - Literary Cafe Fri, Nov 19 7pm

I have been confirmed to recite from "Travels in a Blue Chair" at the 5th Literary Cafe presented by the Theatre of Change, which will be held at the Big Guy's Little Coffee Shop.

It will be on Friday Nov 19th at 7 pm.

The cafe is located in New Toronto, in the city's west end, at 2861 Lake Shore Blvd W (between Fourth and Fifth streets on the south side).

I appeared at the first Literary Cafe and really enjoyed it....so if you are looking for something to do on a Friday night, come early, as the cafe is quite an intimate location.

I will be reciting one of the funniest experiences I ever had travelling alone....trying to find a wheelchair friendly washroom behind the old iron curtain, in Budapest Hungary.

I we are lucky the hilarious "Blackberry Poet" will even be on hand too!

Creating an ad on Facebook

I decided to try my hand at creating an ad on Facebook. The ad system is targeted to different demographic groups chosen when making the ad.

I chose books, adventurers, disability and those people over 30 yrs of age.

I am hoping this could help spread the word about "Travels in a Blue Chair" to a whole new group of readers!

Disability Studies programs at universities.

Whilst visiting a great friend of mine, named Jennifer, out on the west coast recently, I found out that her book on film making techniques has really taken off.

It turned out that a key individual in Jennifer's field has sought her out to include some passages in their new book. It proved a boost to the circulation of Jennifer's book!!

We discussed trying to find out who might be a key individual in the field of Disability Studies and see if they could see the value of "Travels in a Blue Chair" to those students in this new field of study.

What a great idea, and so innovative! I am planning on following up to see if this is a possibility. You never know who the next great idea is going to come from!

Oh, the Places You Can Go! Stephen Hawking cover

The fall issue of Abilities magazine is out and my article, entitled "Oh, the Places You Can Go!" is in the travel section on page 21. At the end there is a footnote about my book "Travels in a Blue Chair: Alaska to Zambia, Ushuaia to Uluru".

The layout is great and the cover of this issue includes a story about the great disabled scientist Stephen Hawking.

I really hope that all who read the article are inspired to get out and travel on their own or with a friend. Even if you are in a wheelchair, the world of travel awaits!

I have been advised that the new, fall edition of Abilities magazine will be out in the coming weeks. Apparently the article and layout look fantastic!

A visit to Europe !

I had the great chance to visit some wonderful friends, many from my book. In England, I visited Esther, Luke and their new baby!

We had the chance to attend lots of birthday parties and go to the zoo! I also visited London and Windsor Castle!

A week later, I went to northern Italy to visit Elisa, Stefano and their child. I met the couple backpacking through Chile, and they had invited me over to visit. It was very hot, but we escaped to the mountains! I also had a chance to visit the Ferrari museum and manufacturing facility.

Later I went to Roma for a brief time to see some of the ancient sites!

A new adventure!

In a few short days I will be heading off to Europe to see some of my old friends from my backpacking adventures, and you will know many of them from stories in my book!

I will be meeting up with Luke and Esther, from the last chapter, who are now married and have a new baby, who will be 1 year old just after I arrive!

I am hoping to meet up with Sarah, whom I met in Chile and I will be going to Italy to visit Elisa and Stefano and their 4 year old (almost!) before heading down to Rome. I have never been to Italy so am really looking forward to it.

Still have to pack, so the excitement is only starting to build !

Disability Studies

One of the interesting things about publishing a book is that you get to see the area in which readers purchase their copies of "Travels in a Blue Chair".

I am always amazed at how many people in the UK are especially enthusiastic!

I still think I need to make a better effort to try to get the word out to professors of Disability Studies programs, and I will be working to that end.

It is amazing to see that I have now had almost 2000 channel views on my YouTube account!!

There are lots of people who come to watch the videos of my interviews to learn more about "Travels in a Blue Chair", and listen to me talk about my adventures.

It is nice to read a book by an author, but probably just as nice to be able to hear some of the stories in my own words!

I was at a local community meeting this week and the lady who was checking in the participants recognized me! She had a copy of "Travels in a Blue Chair" and was telling everyone who would listen how much she enjoyed the book.

Today, I was participating at a local clean up day for our neighbourhood park. One of the main organizers had seen an article about me in the local paper and asked if I had a copy that he could ask me to sign. I did.

Wow, it is great to receive lots of positive feedback from all over the world but even nicer to get some in your own backyard!!

The Morning Show on ITV in the UK

I will be visiting some friends in England this summer and have been researching some of the local "chat shows" telecast in the United Kingdom.

One of the biggies is "The Morning Show" on the ITV network. I will be contacting them to see if they would like their viewers to learn more about "Travels in a Blue Chair".

The program airs at 10 am each weekday morning, so since my plane arrives in London at 6 am, it could work out quite well.

Recently I received a wonderful email from a young college student in Victoria, who had recently become disabled.

She was struggling because her parents were reluctant to support her in planning a trip to the US, even though she had travelled extensively prior to the onset of her illness.

I was asked for advice, and I simply told her that she should go for it. Her friends at the other end would be waiting to meet her and help out, if necessary. I explained that things would certainly go wrong, as they always do, but that was just part of the fun.

It is always great to meet new travellers looking to take up the challenge, and it gratifies me that "Travels in a Blue Chair" is really making a difference out there!!

TTC Wheel Trans - Disabled Adventurer

I ride the TTC, which is the local mass transit system here in Toronto, each day into the downtown part of the city.

A few weeks ago a woman working for the TTC asked to take some photos of riders using the system, for their newsletter. I had my picture snapped and hopefully I will be included in the next edition.

I explained to the reporter that they could point out that "North America's Disabled Adventurer" rides the TTC !!

I have been contacted by Scott Rains of the Rolling Rains Report. Scott is doing a consulting stint for Bookshare.org and has asked me to get my book digitized into Daisy format, for people with print disabilities.

I have always wanted "Travels in a Blue Chair" to be available in alternate format for the visually impaired. Bookshare is funded by private organizations and makes books available when authors agree.

I am really looking forward to reaching a new audience of travel lovers!! I am sure they will enjoy all the funny stories in the book too!

I went to the reading on Friday, and I expected that it would only take an hour or so, as I understood that I was second on the agenda, out of a total of three respondents.

When I arrived, it turned out that the organizers had received a lot of late interest after putting posters up around the village.

I actually was fifth, and just before an intermission! The whole event lasted from 7-10 pm, and the little coffee house was packed to the rafters. In fact, the overflow had to sit and listen from out in the main lobby.

There were lots of really good poetry readings, many of them original, and the moderator always recited something brief, between introductions.

I read a story from Fiji, out of my book "Travels in a Blue Chair", and it was warmly received, with lots of great feedback.

It was a very worthwhile evening and opened my eyes to all the other closet authors out there composing in the dark!

Many thanks to all the folks at the Theatre of Change, involved for having me out to this wonderful recital.

Jennifer forwarded me a copy of the latest Abilities magazine and "Travels in a Blue Chair" was included in a section outlining various book by disabled authors.

The magazine has a wide audience of disabled people throughout North America.

It is great to see that others are out there writing up their experiences so that many people can benefit from experience.

Additionally, I was asked to provide some thoughts on possibly writing an article for an upcoming issue. The next editorial meeting is in May, so we'll keep in touch and I will look forward to working with the magazine again later this year!

World Book Day.

Today is World Book Day!! I have really never thought about it, because it seems to be very low key (I only found out about it on Twitter just now), but it is a great idea.

The wonderful thing about books is that they take you to adventures or ideas that you may never have thought about before. Books can inspire you.

I wish I had known about World Book Day ahead of time so that I could have participated in an event, but for this year I am just happy to know that someone, somewhere, will pick up "Travels in a Blue Chair" and enjoy the stories.

In the end, that is all any author can really ask for!

LeDrew Live on CP24 - CablePlus 24

I have sent a note off to the program LeDrew Live on CablePulse 24, which is here in Toronto.

The program is quite wide ranging and they often have people on have a different point of view that may be interesting. Additionally, viewers can phone in and ask questions. The show is on during prime time at 8 pm, so there would be a large audience.

The program is simulcast on radio 1050 am, so people can listen in while driving in the car!

I am hoping to hear back is a short while, as it could be my first interview of 2010.

Rotary Toronto and The Rotarian

I have had so many successful speaking engagements at Rotary Clubs over the last year, that I am hoping to arrange a presentation at one of the many clubs here in the Toronto area.

Since a portion of the royalties from the book are donated each year to Rotary International's polio eradication fund, it is always great to meet the local members.

I am always received with a very warm welcome.

Maybe some day I will finally even get mentioned in "The Rotarian" magazine, which has thus far not been interested in "Travels in a Blue Chair"? I am nothing, if not optimistic!

I have been asked to write a first person essay for Abilities magazine and have lots of ideas in mind, most of them revolve around motivating the disabled to get out and travel.

YouTube video views surpass 6000 !!

One of the great things about the internet is the immediate impact you can make all over the world.

As I have been interviewed on TV and radio since publishing the book, I have been able to make these available on YouTube. I recently checked the account and was astonished to see that the various videos have been viewed over 6000 times. To me, that really speaks volumes.

It is also very interesting to track the countries whose viewers are tuning in. Many people I meet comment on seeing me in these interviews, and I receive lots of positive feedback.

It is another great way of reaching out to let other disabled and travel lovers find out about the existence of "Travels in a Blue Chair".

One of the great things about attending book events are the people you meet and learning about the great organizations out there for the disabled.

On Tuesday evening, I attended a book reading at the Long Branch Public Library in Toronto's west end.

I had been invited by Dorota, who works there and who had met me at a book signing late last year.

It was a rather mild night for mid-January and there were about 20 people in attendance, including some friends of mine, who surprised me and came out to support the book.

I started the hour by talking about my experiences and why I wrote "Travels in a Blue Chair", then I read two stories from the book, one from Argentina and the other about Fiji. To end the evening I answered some questions from the crowd.

As usual at my events, the interest was overwhelming and it took longer than the one hour allocated. I finished up with a book signing.

I also had many photos takes, as a photographer from SNAP, a glossy monthly Toronto publication was in attendance.

Many thanks to Dorota, the library and all who attended for making me so welcome and getting the new year off to such a positive start!

It was a great afternoon on Sunday, down at Tatsu's Bread here on the lake shore in the west end of Toronto! I met so many new friends and they all asked about "Travels in a Blue Chair", and many asked me to sign a copy of the book for them.

Also, many thanks to Tatsu, the baker and owner of the bakery, who was so welcoming. Tatsu introduced me to this wife and little daughters and all the staff kept me supplied with great coffee all afternoon long. One of Tatsu's daughters is named, Kaete, which is Japanese for "maple leaf" ! Isn't that a wonderful name?

One of the people who came in to meet me and discuss the book, was Dorota, from the Long Branch Public Library, near the border with Mississauga. Dorota had learned about my book via the posters some of my friends had put up around the neighbourhood. She asked me to sign a copy and invited me to a book discussion group she hosts at her library branch!! We are aiming for early next year.

Many thanks to all my friends who came out to talk to me that day as well as Cy and Isabelle, who worked on the posters. You guys are the best !!

Disability Studies programs

I have started to email faculty members of universities which offer degree programs in Disability Studies.

So far, I have sent out about 17 messages, as a test. I am quite surprised to have received quite a bit of positive feedback with many of the professors thanking me for letting them know about the book and promising to follow up.

I will continue sending out these messages over the next few weeks to help spread the word.

I have contacted the BBC in England about possibly being interviewed on their great website for the disabled called "OUCH!".

Boston Book Expo

Richard Branson - Virgin Atlantic Airways

I got a brainstorm this week to contact Richard Branson, the owner of the "Virgin" brand, and specifically "Virgin Atlantic Airways". As a result, I left a message to him on his website.

I know that he is a lover of adventure and I thought it might be a good idea to tell him about myself and "Travels in a Blue Chair".

Additionally, I wanted to enquire to see if he would be interested in sponsoring a year of worldwide travel via his airline.

I am hoping to use this trip to create a documentary, in conjunction with the "Virgin Earth Challenge", to show that the disabled can travel the world independently and enjoy the planet and the many cultures on it!

It could really motivate other disabled people to travel too!

It is early days yet, and I haven't heard back....but I am hoping that I will.

My talk in Dunnville

I really enjoyed my talk in Dunnville yesterday. Everyone there was so hospitable, and Joyce had even set up some coffee and treats on a back table.

The crowd was very receptive and I even remembered to set my cell phone to beep 15 minutes before the hour was up, so that I would leave time for questions. Many of those in attendance introduced themselves to me beforehand and already had questions or told me about their recent travel adventures! It was so great.

The talk went quite well and when it was question time, one fellow, a library user, had already checked out "Travels in a Blue Chair" and told us how much he enjoyed it. He had even written down some of his favourite passages and surprised me with a present - two beers! - because he said I was usually enjoying one in most of my stories. What a neat thing to happen.

I signed many copies of the book and then talked for an hour afterwards to many of the patrons.

Yesterday morning I was interviewed on the phone by John Derringer, the morning man on Q-107!

The interview went quite well and lasted about 6 minutes. John had lots of very good questions and, though I was a bit nervous, I tried to answer as smoothly as possible.

They will air the interview sometime next week, and they will let me know in advance so that I can let folks know ahead of time.

Q-107 has streaming audio online, so you can hear the interview via the internet wherever in the world you happen to be.

Dunnville Chronicle Article

Here is the text of an article published last week in the Dunnville Chronicle in advance of my visit to the library there this Sunday...

"One of the things that interested me most when I was a disabled kid sitting in front of the TV was nature programming," reads an excerpt from Travels in a Blue Chair, a book written by world traveller, Walt Balenovich.

"It was the thrill of a lifetime when in 1993 on a visit to Kenya, my friend Wayne suggested we fly out to the Masai Mara, Kenya's portion of the Serengeti, for two days camping. I didn't know if I could do it, but if he was willing to take me, then I was definitely going to give it a try.

"I could never have imagined the wondrous beauty of this continent and I looked down," he said, describing the view from the plane, "wondering which animals were playing their daily game of life and death. The Africa of open fields and animal migration is slowly fading into history, as fences are erected and forests are brought down to clear for planting. This is exactly what happened in North America and ultimately led to the end of the buffalo and the First Nations' way of life."

In addition to vivid accounts of Masai warrior traditions and monstrous Nile perch weighing 175 pounds, the Kenya chapter describes spectacular sightings of cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and lions, seen from a Land Rover during safaris.

"After two days out of my blue chair and in the front seat of this bumpy ride, my sore bum was starting to get the better of me," wrote Balenovich.

"We began to make our way back to camp and as we did, another herd of antelope seemed to gather to bid us farewell."

Diagnosed with polio at just 12 weeks old, he spent the first five years of his life in hospital. Originally from Welland, Balenovich became a self-described "I. T. geek," earning the necessary funds to travel the globe in trips spanning six months to a year.

His journey around the world began as a bench-warming athlete and coach in wheelchair basketball, rugby and sledge hockey, as well as in his capacity as a volunteer in disabled sports, as Athletic Director of the Niagara District Wheelchair Association and Vice President of the Development for the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association.

Balenovich currently lives in the Lakeshore Village community of Toronto, and can often be spotted wheeling a 10-kilometre route through the lakeshore streets in an effort to stay fit for his trips.

He has spent significant parts of the past 15 years navigating the world, and sending humourous e-mails to friends and family about his unique adventures, from being stranded in a small boat in the dark on the Java Sea off Indonesia to falling out of his chair and breaking his leg in Victoria Falls in Zambia. Their reaction was invariably the same: "You should write a book."

Peppered with liberal doses of humour, Balenovich's tales chronicle the distinctive challenge of seeing the world from a wheelchair.

An excerpt written in November 1977 from Tokyo, reads: "As I was anticipating my date with the white throne ... I attended the washroom, which luckily has an oversized stall for the disabled. As I left the stall, I was surprised to see an elderly woman with what seemed like a handmade broom, sweeping out the men's room. She worked diligently and took no notice of me, but what really surprised me were the men at the urinals, going about their business, and taking no notice of her. My notions of the staid Japanese were immediately challenged and I realized that Asia was going to be a totally unique experience for me."

Balenovich has made numerous media appearances, including guest segments on Canada AM and Breakfast TV, sharing his adventures about backpacking --usually unaccompanied --on all six habitable continents.

The well-known author will share more exciting excerpts from his book at the Dunnville Public Library on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2 p. m.

"I have been contacted by Joyce, the Coordinator of the Dunnville Branch of the Haldimand-Norfolk Library, about speaking there in September," he said. "Apparently, some library patrons from the community had heard me speaking last month at the Hagersville Abilities Centre and really enjoyed listening to some of my adventures. Dunnville is one of my favourite towns in Ontario, and it would be great to meet some of the disabled community along the Grand River."

The Rotarian - Polio - Stratford Rotary presentation.

I was happy to be able to speak at the Stratford Rotary Club this afternoon. It has been a long time in the planning, but it finally happened.

The group was so welcoming and I was finally able to meet Ying, Elizabeth and Bruce. In addition Alex and Gerry were also very accommodating.

The reaction to my presentation was very positive and tremendously enthusiastic!

I made my royalty presentation for Polio Eradication to Gerry, the treasurer, which he will submit to head office and Alex told me they would submit an article to "The Rotarian", about my book "Travels in a Blue Chair".

I was able to answer questions and sign some books too!

Speaking Engagements - Disability

September will be a busy month with two speaking engagements on tap.

Early in the month I will be speaking to the Stratford Rotary club about my travels and how a portion of royalties from "Travels in a Blue Chair" are donated to Rotary International's program to eradicated polio in the third world.

Later in September, I will be speaking at the Dunnville public library about the book, and the capabilities of the disabled.

I am really looking forward to meeting some great new people and exchanging some stories!

Disability Badge - Cub Scouts

My friend Paul has two sons who are very active in the scouting movement. Also, Paul himself is a leader, and has asked me to speak about my book and some of my experiences, so that the group can help earn their badge for disability.

I think it is great that they have a disability badge these days!

Paul was concerned that since the cubs meet down some stairs, in a church hall, that they would have to find a new location.

I mentioned that I thought we should meet in the usual location and he could help me down the stairs, as he usually does.

It will help open up the kids eyes a bit and hopefully give them a peek into my world. I know this will be a positive experience for all of us, together!

My latest adventure was heading up to some friends' cottage over the long weekend. I caught a muskie! That is the second time I have fished for them, and I have been lucky enough to catch one on both occasions.

Check out the teeth on that fish! It was released back into the lake.

It was a lot of fun but I think I'll stick to land and life in my Blue Chair :)

On the weekend I received a wonderful e-mail from a woman named Carolyn, who loved "Travels in a Blue Chair".

Carolyn, has wandered about the world on her own and has been all the way to Poland to visit the house where her father was born. It was so nice to hear from another kindred spirit. Way to go Carolyn!

Also on the weekend, The doctor from Paris phoned me up just to chat and ask where my next trip was going to be. Dr. Jean also updated me on many of his patients, and the fact that he always shows them my website and blog to try and inspire them to get out and travel, while having a positive self image.

So nice to receive great feedback from all over the world!

One of the interesting things that has come out of my entering the competition to be an Antarctic blogger, is the exposure it has brought.

Ryan, from ekoVenture, has asked me to be an online travel "guru" for their new website. I checked out their site and it actually looks pretty cool.

I will be working on my profile for ekoVenture over the next little while, and will post a link when it is up and running!

Rotary Club - Stratford meeting in mid September

I am quite looking forward to meeting the members of the Stratford Rotary Club in midSeptember at one of their regular meetings.

Originally, I was contacted early last year by member Kevin McCann, however his untimely passing justifiably delayed my speaking to the Statford club.

Elizabeth has contacted me again and we have set a date to meet the group and many of Kevin's friends and fellow Rotarians.

My first presentation, in Welland late last year, went very well and the reaction was very positive.

I am really looking forward to being in picturesque Stratford later this summer.

The last continent for the traveller in a blue wheelchair!

Hi, My name is Walt, and I am a disabled traveller! I have travelled for 20 years when time and finances have allowed.

Most of the time I have travelled alone. This isn't too unusual until you realise that I travel the world with the use of my blue wheelchair!

I have backpacked across all 6 habitable continents and through 28 countries. The only continent that I have not been to is the one at the bottom of the earth - Antarctica.

For the most part I have flown on planes, or taken trains, but never in my life have I ever been on a cruise, much less one to the home of the Emperor penguin.

I have written a book of short stories, "Travels in a Blue Chair: Alaska to Zambia, Uluru to Ushuaia", about the hilarious adventures I have had in my travels over the years in many strange and fascinating lands.

One of the enduring threads of my travels has been the kindness and hospitality of people whom I meet along the way. Sometimes they have helped me, and sometimes they have accompanied me for a short while. When you travel alone in a blue chair lots of weird things can happen, and even the reactions I get are one-of-a-kind!
I feel that as a storyteller, you will enjoy my blog about the trip to Antarctica.

My blog will be from a unique perspective - even simple things like life about the ship will be an interesting adventure.

A polar adventure we can all share together in the spirit of all the past inspirational explorers who have ventured out into the frozen unknown.

Perhaps the only thing left of me at the end of this will be a frozen blue chair? I hope not!

Q-107 Ryan Parker : Interview in August

Just an update on my previous blog item.

Ryan contacted me by phone yesterday and let me know that he was confused about my wanting to use the phone for the interview, if possible. The station apparently has a policy about guests coming in to do the interviews.

I told him that was no problem! So, we will be touching base again in early August, when both he and John Derringer are back from their respective holidays.

It will be great to be on the Q-107 morning show. I really enjoy listening to those guys, they are funny!

Well, things have taken an unexpected and unpleasant turn!

Before I left for a Canada Day camping holiday we had arranged to record an interview on Monday, July 6th.

I returned to find an email from Ryan, in my box letting me know that Q-107 "will not be able to do the interview next week", and with no comment about arranging a future date.

They had asked for a book, which as readers of this blog know, is the biggest obstacle to getting interviewed, due to the lack of books when you self-publish. I have provided a bio and link to my website, where 3 stories from "Travels in a Blue Chair" could be read. Additionally, I can provide some discussion points.

I had suggested simply phoning the interview, as it would be much easier for me than to go downtown at rush hour. But that was only a suggestion.

Oh well, that is what this blog is all about! The ups and downs, highs and lows, and trials and tribulations of trying to get the word to disabled people about the book's existence.

Ryan did say they would mention my book and try to help me out. They wanted to be updated on future happenings.

Still it would be nice to know what happened and if they are still going to follow through with the interview?

I hope so. I know that John Derringer and all the morning gang and their listeners will really enjoy learning about some of my hilarious adventures!

Michael Ignatieff enjoyed "Travels in a Blue Chair"

Last night I attended the "Party in the Park" in Mimico. It was a great night to get out and enjoy the weather, meet other authors and see all the families together.

It was also a chance to sign some books and meet some people who have enjoyed "Travels in a Blue Chair", over the last few months.

Our M.P. for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Michael Ignatieff was in attendance. He is also the Liberal Party leader, an author, and possibly the next Prime Minister of Canada?

Michael saw me and yelled over "Walt!", he then came over to shake my hand and tell me how much he enjoyed reading my book!

Apparently his copy of "Travels in a Blue Chair" is now in Stornaway, the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition.

Always great to meet up with another author!!

Party in the Park - now at John English School

Due to the garbage strike the park will be closed, so the organisers have made alternative arrangements to hold the event at John English School.

John English School is located centrally in Mimico very close to the Mimico Memorial Park. The school is bordered by George Street and Mimico Ave.

Access to back of school field is off the north end of Central Street and off Mimico Ave.

I attended the Small Press Book Fair on the weekend at the Toronto Reference Library at Yonge and Bloor. It was an interesting experience, as there really weren't that many publishers in attendance, and there were lots of craft oriented groups.

I was able to sign 3 copies of "Travels in a Blue Chair". One was for a Kiwi just as the Fair opened, then I spoke to lots of interested people over the next 6 hours and then signed another two copies just near the end of the event.

It was nice to be able to participate, and many thanks to Terry for helping me to set up early in the morning and to Sue for dropping by near the end to help me pack up.

I know that those who received their copies will enjoy the stories!

June book signings - one this Saturday!

I have lived along the lake shore here in S. Etobicoke for the better part of the last 25 years.

One of the greatest pleasures I am lucky enough to enjoy is the Col. Sam Smith Park, just below the Humber College's Lake Shore Campus at the foot of Kipling Avenue.

Each time I wheel through the many different natural settings, I am reminded of some of the spectacular wild settings I have backpacked all over the world. There may not be any zebras, penguins, or koalas in New Toronto, but a glimpse of the beavers, mink, coyotes, swallows or night herons resident in the wetland makes me realise that I do not always need to go half way around the world to enjoy the same thrills that tourists to our town have on offer right here.

I will be signing books at two local events this month, starting this Saturday morning...

I haven't heard back from John Derringer at Q-107, so not sure why he contacted me in the first place? It is a puzzle.

Also having a hard time connecting with EtobiGO for the Q and A that they had mentioned doing thru our NING web-ring for people living here in the west end of Toronto.

I have finally lined up some assistance for the Toronto Small Press Group Book Fair on Sat. June 13th 9am-5pm. My buddy Terry is going to help me get the books from my car to the table and then my friend Sue wants to stop by and bring me some lunch!! Yay. Really looking forward to the event.

Also some other events are coming together for later in the summer, but I don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet. The weather here is shaping up to be another cool summer, so let's hope it heats up shortly!

John Derringer - Q-107 has made contact !

I received a nice email from John Derringer, the morning man at Q-107 radio, this week! John said he felt awful about missing my emails and asked me to contact him.

He said that the station employs people to review incoming emails and that it probably got overlooked. John had found his way to this blog, via a travel website.

I replied to John on Monday, so hopefully there will soon be some good news! So far, nothing yet, but here's hoping!
